A Creative God

Me at the IVCF Booth
So for those who don't know.  I was at the Canadian Chinese Christian Winter Conference (CCCWC).  It's a Chinese Christian Conference that has been around for now 51 years!!  I have gone in my first couple of years of University and then went again these past couple of years.

The difference between the University years and now is that I am now a full-time minister and went for the purpose of promoting IVCF (and Urbana) among the Chinese Church Communities.  Leslie (UBC Staff) lead worship with his very musically talented students at this conference.  When Leslie and I arrived at Winter Con, we started to wonder about how we would be able to promote IVCF (and Urbana) without being disrespectful.  We couldn't just tell people to join IVCF or go to Urbana and all we had was a booth that nearly no one goes to.  To our surprise though, God brought some really creative ways in promoting IVCF.  The following are a few of the creative ways.

1.  Urbana style worship.  Some in different languages (Hakuna Mungu Kama Wewe)
2.  Pastors, speakers, and newly made friends advocating for IVCF and Para-Church organizations (C4C, IVCF, Navigators, etc).
3.  Main Speaker being a product of IVCF and responding to the call of Full-time Vocational Ministries at Urbana 79.  He shared his experiences with IVCF while he was in University!!

These are a few of the things that God was able to do and provide for IVCF at Winter Con.  I feel that after this Conference, the participants now know what IVCF is and what we are all about.  All I have to say is... Praise The Lord!!

PS. For those who don't know what Urbana is, it's a HUGE missions conference put on by IVCF North America (Canada & US).  Imagine 20,000+ students from all over the world congregating for the sole purpose of global missions.

Yet His Love Goes Further Still

Towards the end of the conference, I had the honor and privilege of being able to share my testimony during the closing ceremonies.  I have to say that I was both terrified and excited because this opportunity was promised to me by God almost exactly a year ago.  Here was the testimony that I shared.

Yet His Love Goes Further Still... This was the theme of Winter Con but also a consistent theme in my life.  I would like to share with regards to this theme but for me to do justice in sharing that, it goes back into last year's winter con and a bit into my background.

I have Tourettes.  It's a neurological disorder that makes me do weird things like twitching my head, clicking my  teeth, making weird noises, and the list goes on.  An example of this is like a sneeze.  It's irrepressible, you can't help but do it.  Along with my Tourettes I also grew up with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) which when paired together, I sometimes have a memory span of a gnat.

However, I wish I could say I had a good childhood.  So with all this though, growing up with Tourettes was not an easy thing for me.  I remember being bullied, teased, called names, disciplined, and isolated because of my Tourettes.  I remember growing up being very angry at the world around me and it was unfortunate that most of this anger and hatred was directed towards the Chinese Church and Community.

Luckily for me, I didn't stay there.  God's Love continued to go further into my life and eventually, I received a lot of healing towards my own identity.  I now see my Tourettes as a part of me and an amazing gift that God has given me.  My hope is to educated people more with my story.

When I received healing for my Tourettes, I thought that was it, but no... God's Love Goes Further Still.  He then was telling me... through signs that I needed to work on my Asian Identity.  In a lot of ways, I was still frustrated and angry with my Asian identity and culture.  So these are some of the signs that God revealed to me over these past 2 years:  When I did the internship with IVCF, I was placed in an all asian intern team, all asian household, placed in the Korean Christian Fellowship (KCF), and had an asian mentor.  When I was invited onto staff, I was sent to Vancouver, working at the SFU campus, landed BACK into the Chinese Church, an asian girl came into my life (who is now my girlfriend), I went to Winter Con, AND I was going to China.  I think God was VERY clear about me working on my asian identity and that where last year at winter con came into place.

I remember last Winter Con (50th CCCWC) that I did not want to go.  The only reason I wanted to go was because I was invited to be part of a workshop.  When I got to the 50th CCCWC, I remember standing there and saying to myself, “What the heck am I doing here?”  I did NOT want to be there.  During that time, I don’t remember the speakers or workshops, but I do remember 2 encounters in which God spoke to me.

Encounter 1

I had just finished doing my workshop where I was asked to share my testimony/story.  However, I never got a chance to because of time restrictions.  We were reflecting on this time and we both actually felt that it wasn’t my time to share my story yet.  I also did some personal reflection and when I was alone and praying, I felt God come and say this to me…

“Justin, I didn’t allow you to share your story because this part of your story I want you to share is not yet complete.  When I give you the opportunity to share your story, it won’t be with just a few people, it will be in a larger group setting, and you know what?  Everyone will be blessed by it.  Wait…  Wait until China.  Something significant is going to happen for you there.”

So I left there and was surprised but also wondering if that was really going to happen.

Encounter 2

Closing Ceremonies has come and I was in the prayer room.  I was thinking, “I really don’t want to go to closing ceremonies.  I’m just going to skip it.”  Then shortly after, God said to me, “Justin, I want you to go down to closing ceremonies.  Someone is waiting for you there.”  So as reluctant as I was, I went down to closing ceremonies.  Once I got down there, I walked into a room full of Chinese people and sat at the back where there was an empty chair beside me.  I waited, and waited, and waited.  Closing ceremonies started and I still waited, no one came and sat down with me.  Worship started and I was standing worshiping, still no one.  I then felt I needed to sit down so I sat down.  As soon as I sat down, I heard a voice as if it was beside me.  This voice was God and He said,

“Justin, I was waiting for you.  When you look around in this room, what do you see?”

I look around the room and I respond, “Well God, I see about 1500 Chinese Christians of all different generations and ages, all worshiping you.”

God then responds, “Yeah, yes you are right, but Justin, do you know what I see?”

I respond confusingly, “Umm… no Lord… what do you see?”

God then responds, “Justin, I see each and every single one of my children.  Justin, I want you to know that I love you, but I also want you to know that I love each and every single one of my children.”

I pause for a few min to reflect what He said to me, still not understanding what God was talking about.  I then ask, “Umm… well yah Lord, and your point is.”

God then responds, “You are going to love my children like I do.”

As soon as I heard this, my heart dropped.  I knew how much I hated my Chinese identity and culture and how I felt that it would be impossible for me to truly love them again.  Yet, I knew this was God speaking and what he says, go’s.  I then surrender myself to this process but acknowledge my limitations to him.

“Ok Lord, I know this is you and I am going to surrender myself to you with this.  But I want you to know that I am going to need a lot of help.  For this to happen, something short of a miracle has to happen to me.”

God then responds with these words, “Wait…  Wait until China.  Something significant is going to happen for you there.”

It was then I knew that China was going to be significant for me, and to make a long story short, I was went to China with hatred and frustration towards my Chinese identity and culture.  I came back though loving my Chinese identity and culture.  God healed and redeemed me of my Chinese identity.

Which brings me here today.  I am standing before you today as a living testimony of "Yet His Love Goes Further Still."  I am here to say that through being able to truly receive the Love of Jesus Christ, I can now say that I love my Chinese Identity and Culture.  The Love and Joy I am able to experience now, I know does not end here, and it is my hope and prayer that each and everyone of you can experience this redemptive power of love and joy.

I have to say that this experience has really affirmed me in a lot of areas in my life.
  1. My Identity (Tourettes & Asian)
  2. My Relationship (with April)
  3. Calling into Full-time vocational ministry
I am completely blown away in God's affirmations in all these areas of my life and how He brought it all together in just one conference.  The Joy and Peace I am experiencing is overwhelming that can hardly contain it.  I hope you all will also share in the Joy that God has so freely given to all of us =).

Christmas Party! Great Banquet Style!!

Over this past year, Barron and I have both been studying The Parable of the Great Banquet (Luke 14:15-24).  As we continued reflecting on this passage, we asked, what does it mean to "go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in".  The word compel really spoke out to us and we decided, "Lets through a Christmas Party... Great Banquet Style!" and "compel" people to come and fill our house.  So we hosted a potluck Christmas Party at our place.

When the time came for our Christmas Party, students started piling into our place one by one.  Before we knew it, we had 20 people crammed around the table in our place!  Students (Christian & Non-Christian) from all of our communities:  Kung Fu, Orchestra, Out on Campus, Grappling, Small Groups, Point Church, etc was all represented at this Christmas Party and it was such a beautiful sight to see our communities enjoying each others company.

Christmas Party!  Great Banquet Style!!!

The food!!  Oh the food that we had was practically gourmet style and it was in ABUNDANCE!!  Things like:  Turkey, stuffing, gourmet pastas, vegetables, cheese & crackers, sushi, cheesecake.  My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Mmmm.... Deliciousness....

So in summary with this Christmas Party, we had great music, a full house, an abundance of gourmet food and beverages, and most of all, a wonderful time of laughing, chatting, and sharing.  God blessed us with The Great Banquet.

God provided and stirred the hearts of our students to say "Yes" to something that is unique and different than any other community they have been involved with.  This is the beginning of what God has in store for IVCF at SFU.

Christmas Party! Great Banquet Style 2.0

So it does not just end with one Great Banquet!  There was yet another one that surfaced on residence.  Two of our students on residence, Lida and Denee, prepared and cooked a whole Christmas Dinner Feast for the students on residence in the middle of final exams.

Lida & Denee preparing Chocolate Crepes for Dessert

For some of us, it has been a long time since we have last been in school and have forgotten the student life, myself included.  After spending more time with Lida and Denee, I was reminded how stressful it is for students during the final exam period.  The amount of time and commitment they need to put into studying for their final exams is to the point where they don't have enough time to sleep and/or eat.

As I think about sacrificial giving, it requires both time and commitment.  Both of these which are key for students to give to do well on final exams.  However, when I saw Lida and Denee choosing to give up a full day of studying to bless their peers and friends on residence with a full Christmas Dinner, I can only watch in awe and thank God for their hearts to serve and love their friends.

As we were faithful in serving God and serving His children, God blessed us with another 20 students that came and enjoyed a Christmas Dinner with us.  It was again, another Great Banquet, however, this time I got the privilege of seeing the heart and sacrifice behind it from Lida and Denee.

God has indeed blessed Barron and I with amazing students and I pray that we would be good stewards of what He has given us.

Remain in Me...

I am a driven person.  When I truly believe in something, I will do everything in my power to get it done.

I would call this both a blessing and a curse.  It is a blessing that I can get things done and that I can be reliable.  I put to action what has been talked about and ask the question, "How do we do this?"  It is a curse though because I am so driven, I will do things on my own and try to make things happen with own strength.  As a result, I measure my success based on the success of the event or task that I was determined to do, often resulting in disappointment.

I have been reflecting on this for a number of years now asking the questions, "How do I find the balance?  How can I be driven and while also being faithful to God?"  These are tough questions and I feel that some who are reading this can relate to me as well.

Even though I am still asking these questions, I can't help but think back to my China and clotheslining experience.  The theme of slowing down still rings loud and true.  Waiting for God and be a faithful steward of what He has given me.  The passage of the True Vine has been coming up for me again (John 15:1-17).  Especially this part of the passage:

Remain in me, as I also remain in you.  No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.  Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

Here it is, the answer to my questions.  "Remain in me" is the answer.  My drivenness is no longer to be propelled by my own strength but by "remaining in the love of Jesus".  By remaining in Him, that is where I can bear the true fruit and my definition of success will be based on being faithful to what God has called me to do.  This is how I can be both a driven and faithful child of God.
